The Wood:
Has a fine texture, medium lustre and a somewhat oily appearance. A very hard and durable wood, very strong and heavy. The heartwood is reported to be very resistant to decay and termites and other dry wood insects but susceptible to marine borer attack. Holds up well in tropical and very cold conditions. Density 1050kg/m3
The Tree:
May grow 140-150 feet (42.5-45.7m) in height with trunk diameters of 72 inches (1.8m) and frequently to heights of 100 feet (30.5m) and diameters of 24-36 inches (610-910mm). boles are clear to 60 feet (18.2m) and more, with or without buttresses
Colour:
Very sought after for its distinctive blend of brown chocolate colours. Sapwood is yellowish white or whitish in colour. Heartwood is olive brown in colour with lighter or darker streaks.
