The Wood:
The wood is hard and usually very uniform in graining and colour. The texture is fine and even. Moderately durable. When a light is shone onto the surface, it takes on a 3-D like appearance where it looks as if you could reach right into it. It is resistant to termite attack. When quartersawn, the figure of Rosewood shows considerable “flame”, while it exhibits attractive graining when flat-sawn. Density 850kg/m3.
The Tree:
A tall perennial woody plant with a main trunk and branches forming a distinct elevated crown. Includes both gymnosperms and angiosperms. The tree can grow to heights of up to 100 feet (30.5m) and can produce a fairly thin and long timber.
Colour:
A beautiful, dense hardwood with a lustrous appearance. The timber has a rose-coloured background with darker purple striping. The sapwood is pale pink to white and the heartwood is light red brown attractively veined with pin or red stripes (violet in colour). The colour darkens with age to a rich burgundy red.
Typical uses:
Flooring, kitchens, decking, furniture, and joining.
