The Wood:

The ornamental character of the Heartwood is often accentuated by a natural wavy grain. The sapwood and heartwood are usually steamed to match. Fine but open grain. The timber is excellent to work with, including turning and carving. Density 550kg/m3.

The Tree:

 A moderately sized tree reaching about 100 feet (30.5m) and producing a trunk up to 60 inches (1.5m) in diameter.

Colour:

 The sapwood is usually narrow and pale in colour, the heartwood varying in colour from rich chocolate-brown to purplish black. When exposed to strong sunlight the colour fades.

Typical uses:

 Furniture, cabinets, pianos, rifle stocks, musical instruments, flooring, joinery, and kitchens.
